The Shanghai Financial Prosperity Index

The Shanghai Financial Prosperity Index was compiled by Roland Berger Strategy Consultants at the request of the Shanghai Financial Association. It was launched in 2011. The index aims to evaluate the vitality of financial markets in Shanghai in a comprehensive manner, reflect the growth trajectory of the Shanghai International Financial Center and promote the development of Shanghai’s financial industry and its evolution into an international financial hub.

The first Shanghai Financial Prosperity Index was unveiled in May 2011 during a meeting of the Lujiazui Forum. Since then, the annual index report for the previous year is released every May, and the index of financial climate in the first half of the year is unveiled every October. By April 2014, six index reports had been announced. The base year for the index was 2006. The index grew from 2,238 points in 2010 to 3,076 in the first half of 2013, with an annual growth rate of 11.2%. That progression reflected stability and a solid growth trend for financial markets in Shanghai.

The Shanghai Financial Prosperity Index series contains six first-tier indicators and 36 second-tier indications, with adjustments in third-tier indicators to reflect real changes in the development of Shanghai’s financial industry. The Index is aimed at evaluating and analyzing the development of Shanghai’s financial industry and the international financial hub from six aspects, financial markets, financial institutions, financial internationalization, financial innovation, financial talent and financial environment. The index evaluates the current situation, the growth trend and growth capabilities from multiple aspects in a real and objective way, reflecting both growth levels and prosperity. Growth levels can ensure comprehensiveness and continuity and thus reflect the general picture and development trajectory of Shanghai financial industry. The prosperity index evaluates the current market size, trading volumes, price indicators and other objective indicators.
